“Formal” vs. “Empirical” Approaches to Quantum-Classical Reduction

چکیده
I distinguish two types of reduction within the context of quantum-classical relations, which I designate “formal” and “empirical.” Formal reduction holds or fails to hold solely by virtue of the mathematical relationship between two theories; it is therefore a two-place, a priori relation between theories. Empirical reduction requires one theory to encompass the range of physical behaviors that are well-modeled in another theory; in a certain sense, it is a three-place, a posteriori relation connecting the theories and the domain of physical reality that both serve to describe. Focusing on the relationship between classical and quantum mechanics, I argue that while certain formal results concerning singular ~→ 0 limits have been taken to preclude the possibility of reduction between these theories, such results at most block reduction in the formal sense. Little if any reason has been given for thinking that they block reduction in the empirical sense. I then briefly outline a strategy for empirical reduction that is suggested by work on decoherence theory, arguing that this sort of account remains a fully viable route to the empirical reduction of classical to quantum mechanics and is unaffected by such singular limits.

When the classical & quantum mechanical considerations hint to a single point; a microscopic particle in a one dimensional box with two infinite walls and a linear potential inside it
In this paper we have solved analytically the Schrödinger equation for a microscopic particle in a one-dimensional box with two infinite walls, which the potential function inside it, has a linear form. Based on the solutions of this special quantum mechanical system, we have shown that as the quantum number approaches infinity the expectation values of microscopic particle position and square ...
متن کاملCognitive architectures combine formal and heuristic approaches.
Quantum probability (QP) theory provides an alternative account of empirical phenomena in decision making that classical probability (CP) theory cannot explain. Cognitive architectures combine probabilistic mechanisms with symbolic knowledge-based representations (e.g., heuristics) to address effects that motivate QP. They provide simple and natural explanations of these phenomena based on gene...
متن کاملA quantum information architecture for cue-based heuristics
Cues indicating the state of the world play a critical role in decision-making in both inferential and preferential tasks, and are the focus of many heuristic models of cognitive processes. In this paper, we present the formal logical structure that is presupposed in a specific class of these processes: fast and frugal heuristics. We review the structure of these heuristics and show that they m...
متن کاملConstacyclic Codes over Group Ring (Zq[v])/G
Recently, codes over some special finite rings especially chain rings have been studied. More recently, codes over finite non-chain rings have been also considered. Study on codes over such rings or rings in general is motivated by the existence of some special maps called Gray maps whose images give codes over fields. Quantum error-correcting (QEC) codes play a crucial role in protecting quantum ...
متن کاملStructure-Activity Relationship of Imidazobenzodiazepines, an AM1 Semi-Empirical Quantum Mechanics Study
Conformations and electronic properties of a series of imidazobenzodiazepines are investigated by AM1 semi-empirical quantum mechanics method. It is shown that substitution of Cl in position 7 instead of 8, changes the geometry of the seven membered lactam ring; this may put the N5 nitrogen in a better positon to act as a hydrogen bond acceptor, and the phenyl ring in position 6 is probably...
